The pictures in this section are for the vegetable garden… You will see pictures of the garden before I started digging it up, as the plants were coming up, and as they grew. There is also a section on future plans.
Brick sidewalk uncovered going from the den to the old covered patio.
Everyone that comes over that has been in the backyard in years past says they never knew the sidewalk was even there. It was covered up with this awful creeping weed that some people call Creeping Charlie. The wheelbarrow is sitting where the okra was planted. The 2nd planting of green beans, purple beans, and Lima beans were planted to the left. The pole beans were planted farther down on the same side. The Cabbage and Asparagus were planted above where the wheelbarrow is. To the right of the sidewalk is where the old fish pool is and where I planted some of the perennials, There are also some bulbs in that area. The Amaranthus was planted to the right of the sidewalk. You will also notice the Japanese Rice Paper Plant growing by the cold covered patio.
Suzanne bought these plants long before I had any place for them. I built a raised bed for them after they had been in a sun room for several weeks. I should have planted them WAY sooner here in Mississippi and the bugs wouldn’t have consumed them. They really look good in this picture, though!
Making progress. I just keep digging as I need more space. This picture was taken 6-28-09. You can see how the Japanese Paper Plant. I was trying to do so much at once. Working in the house, trimming and pruning shrubs, fighting Trumpet Vines and Wisteria, MOSQUITOES, and the heat! The old covered patio will be torn down and the garden will be extended all the way back to the fence along the alley. You can see the first crop of Top Crop Green Beans, the Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans, and the zucchini.
It seems so amazing how much EVERYTHING had grown!

Second crop of Purple Queen (left) and Top Crop (center) Bush Beans. Thorogreen Limas on the right. Taken 8-23-09.

The garden is beginning to show signs of the end of the season. The weather is now getting cooler. Picture taken 10-23-09.
I prefer growing open-pollinated varieties, but there have been a few others in my distant past that have been hybrid. The seed sources I have listed will be growers and supplies of open-pollinated varieties. Some carry both hybrid and open-pollinated varieties. I prefer to list companies that grow their own seed, or at lease have a trial garden. I don’t do business with mail-order garden centers that don’t even have a garden! Not on purpose anyway! IF you see a source that is contrary to that, let me know and I will remove them from the list.
