FAMILY: Zingiberaceae
GENUS: Alpina
SPECIES: galangal
COMMON NAME: Lemon Ginger
This plant is on a “tree” page even though it isn’t a tree at all! I just bought them at the same time as the trees and they are always with the trees. This plant is very easy to grow and are cold hardy in zones 8 and higher. They go best in part shade and mine have grown exceptionally well in morning sun and afternoon shade. Mine have done very well in big clay pots and have nearly filled it. They have fragrant leaves and produce small white orchid-like flowers, but mine have not bloomed yet. They produce edible roots with a lemon pepper/ginger taste and are used in many Asian recipes. . They grow to a height of 5-6 feet. Awesome! They spread by edible underground rhizomes.
They have medicinal properties and have the effects of an aphrodisiac and act as a stimulant. I will do more research on medicinal benefits and as them later. Lemon Ginger is used in African-American folk medicine and hoodoo folk medicine.
The Ginger in the red pot was beginning to complain because the other two always get their picture taken! So, I took this picture and measured it so it would be happy! It would have been in a larger pot, but I ran out. I suppose that is why it is a little smaller than the other two…
