FAMILY: Rutaceae
GENUS: Citrus
SPECIES: aurantifolia
COMMON NAME: Key Lime
The Key Lime Tree makes a good potted tree that can (and should) be brought inside for the cooler months. It is only winter hardy in zones 10a-11 (30-40 degrees F). While mine has been in the sun room, where there hasn’t been any heat, it has done OK in temperatures as low as 25 for a few hours at a time. As long as temperature changes are gradual, and they do not get frost bit, lower temperatures are sometimes OK for short periods of time. They like growing in full sun to part shade in well drained soil. They are an evergreen and bloom off and on all year (I think?).
There are other limes with different species names so I hope I have the correct one for the Key Lime. Correct me if I am wrong.
