I enjoy the Banana trees for a touch of the tropical look! There are many more varieties I would like to try. They grow best in temperatures above 65 degrees.
You can choose from a very good selection of Banana Trees from many reliable sources. They come a good range of sizes and leaf colors and hardiness zones to fit many different climates. They can be left outside in their proper zones or grown in pots and brought inside for the winter.
When I was in California, I noticed Banana trees growing in many yards. Even here in Leland, Mississippi there are yards with Banana trees growing in them. A friend of mine has a few Banana trees that actually produced Bananas this year, but I don’t think they matured. These are not the ornamental bananas that produce inedible fruits, but HUGE trees. I have always read that there are not any commercially grown Bananas grown in the U.S. because we don’t have a long enough growing season. I have heard that you can grow the smaller Bananas, like the ones I have, in pots and bring them in and they will grow Bananas. This is just something you will have to experiment with.
