FAMILY: Sarraceniaceae
GENUS: Sarracenia
SPECIES: purpurea
COMMON NAME: Pitcher Plant
S. purpurea seems like a real dainty plant! It grows in clumps to 6-12 inches in height. It is kind of green with purple veins. It is winter hardy outside in zones 4a-9b (-30 to 25 degrees F). As with all Pitcher Plants, they need plenty of water. If you keep them in containers, keep it in a water filled tray (rain water or distilled water ONLY!) Do not use tap water! They prefer part sun to light shade. They are very good for bog gardens.
All pitcher plants are poisonous in ingested.
