Pictures of the three Purple Datura taken on August 7, 2009. The two little trees behind the Datura are Pomegranate.
Datura is another genus in the Solanaceae family, commonly known as Angel Trumpet. I planted the Purple Datura I have from seed and I have no idea what species they are. Datura are not as cold hardy as some of the Brugmansia species. They are cold hardy in zones 9a-11 (20-40 degrees F). They work well in containers and should come in for the winter, as they are not frost tolerant.
These little Purple Datura seedlings have done pretty good, but they must be a small variety. The seeds germinated, the seedlings grew fairly quickly for a while then just kind of stopped! To my amazement, they budded! Then they bloomed fully in November. It was kind of an odd sight after having so many blooms on the Brugmansia, and seeing these with one each, right on top and sticking straight up. The blooms were almost as long as the plants were tall!!!
There are many varieties I want to plant of the Datura, and I have a wish list of them, too!
All parts of the Angel Trumpets are poisonous.
