CULTIVAR: Portora
HYBRIDIZER: Garner
This variety has done very well. They have nice green leaves with darker stems. They can grow 6-8 feet tall. They are cold hardy in zone 7b-11 (5-40 degrees F) but I dug mine up for the winter anyway. They didn’t mind being taken from the ground and put in a large pot with plenty of organic matter and a good professional medium. It continued to grow like nothing ever happened.
Araceae Alocasia x portora ‘Portora’ is a hybrid of A. odora and A. portei. That was a moth full! It is supposed to produce purple/brown flowers anywhere from mid-spring through early winter… Probably depends where you live. It will definitely make a very nice specimen plant!
As with all Elephant Ears, keep the soil evenly moist and avoid letting them dry out between watering. This species likes sun to part shade or light shade.
The other Alocasias have apparently decided to go dormant, even though I put them in pots and brought them inside! A. ‘Portora’, however, is till going strong!
