FAMILY: ARACEAE
GENUS: Alocasia
SPECIES: lauterbachiana
This variety has long wavy edged leaves. The leaves are a nice dark green with a reddish tint. The stems are kind of a maroon color. This plant can grow 4 feet or more tall. They prefer to grow in evenly moist soil, not allowed to dry between watering, in part to full shade.
Dave’s Garden says they are winter hardy in zone 11 (40 degrees), and other information says 9-10! As with all Alocasias, they may go dormant when temperatures reach 45 degrees
As of December 10, 2009, inside in a pot, it isn’t showing any signs of rot but only one leaf is slightly green. It was growing a new leaf, but all signs of growth have stopped.
Perhaps they would have done better if I had initially put them in large pots instead of in the ground… We’ll see in 2010!
