FAMILY: Araceae
GENUS: Alocasia
SPECIES: macrorrhizos
CULTIVAR: ‘Borneo Giant’
Alocasia ‘Borneo Giant’ could reach a height of 8-12 feet tall. It is winter hardy in USDA Zones 9b-10 (25-40 degrees). It prefers high light, sun to part shade. As with all Alocasias, they may go dormant when temps drop below 45 degrees. They prefer to have their soil kept evenly moist and does not to dry out between watering. They do well in bogs and water gardens.
My ‘Borneo Giant’ did really well until I transplanted it into a pot to be brought inside for the winter. It was suggested to me to bring them inside, so I did… The temps did drop down in the 20′s here, but I had it in the sun room. It is either going dormant anyway or rotting. I am not sure which. It looks like a dark area is moving up the stem… I’ll just have to see what happens next! I can’t imagine having a 10′ Alocasia in my house!
