DORMANCY TABLE
This is just a guide to help you figure out why your succulents just seem to be sitting idle sometimes, while other times they grow like mad! For example, my Haworthia emelyae just sit all summer and did absolutely nothing. Then one day I noticed it has this 12 inch stem shooting out of it with blooms on it… Then it started growing like crazy and has nearly doubled in size in just a few months! The Crassula lycopioides, also summer dormant, grew a little during the summer but has REALLY grown over the winter! The Cereus forbesii montana, which is a cactus not a succulent, grows so slow you can’t tell it is even alive except it stays green. The Echiveria ‘Topsy Turvy’, which is winter dormant, bloomed continuously from Spring until at least November… But even though it is winter dormant, it has been growing new shoots all winter. You also have to consider where you have them located, how much light they prefer, and maybe the temperature they like during the winter when they have to stay in the house. Be careful not to water succulents and cactus to much in the winter as their roots can rot if the soil stays to damp. During the summer, when you may have the pots sitting outside, the warm breeze and sun helps to dry out the soil… That doesn’t happen in the winter in the house. At least not in the mansion!
WINTER DORMANT
This first list are dormant during the cooler months of the year, depending on where you live perhaps, from November through February. They do most of their growing from in early summer through October, but may also slow down somewhat during the hottest parts of the summer.

SUMMER DORMANT
This list is of the ones that can make you wonder if you are doing something wrong! They just seem to be sitting idle while everything else is growing! Don’t worry though, they are dormant during the summer months from May through August. While some of them grow a little during this period, they do most of their growing from September through April. It could also depend on where you live as well as to when they slow down or take off.

Very helpful list!
Mary Ellen,
Yes it is a very helpful list. I found it on the Highland Succulents Website (a source listed farther down on the right). Go to this site and you will really be blown away!
